Report on AFCI Locations Expo 2006
1st May 2006
The 21st annual Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) Location's Expo Tradeshow was held from April 7 to 9 in Santa Monica, California, and brought together more than 260 AFCI-member film commissions to the event.
Film New Zealand was represented by Susan Ord, Peter Avery, Film Venture Taranaki, Angela Littlejohn, a Wellington based line producer, and Mike Holloway from Red Locations. Mike Horgan and Catherine Ragan represented Investment New Zealand.
The 3 day event attracted nearly 3500 visitors from the greater Los Angeles film making community including major studio representatives, location scouts, writers, producers and directors. Smaller independent production companies were also well represented. Projects ranged from those at very early script development stage to those that are nearly green lit.
Locations Expo still remains one of the few opportunities for American entertainment industry people to make contact with film offices from around the world, to discuss projects, production needs and financial incentives.
The event also included several sidebar seminars - one on international financial incentives and one on accessing and using American military resources both within the U.S and abroad.
Film New Zealand giveaway materials included Production Guides and the regional film office's presentation packs. Our two plasma screens showcased location images from around the country and a one hour compilation DVD played throughout – included on this were film trailers, snippets from EPKs, tvcs and production reels from various post houses.
The AFCI Marketing Awards for 2006 were also announced at the tradeshow and Film New Zealand took 1st place in the 'national' film office section in three separate key categories for its logo, its www.filmnz.com website and the new edition of The New Zealand Screen Production Guide.
