Film NZ Structure
Film New Zealand was founded in 1994 by the screen production industry. It is New Zealand’s national film office and screen business agency located in the capital city Wellington, with representation also in Los Angeles and Auckland. Screen industry participation and representation continues to the present day with a Board who draw on both screen and corporate expertise.
Film New Zealand acts as the principal gateway for screen businesses wishing to work in New Zealand, and provides a range of marketing, technical and advisory business services to offshore companies, producers and the US Hollywood studios; NZ companies and the NZ Government.
Its mission is to promote New Zealand offshore as a significant centre of excellence for international screen production, highlighting key areas such as business friendliness, creativity, technical expertise, incentives and locations, and to provide the best possible advice, support and information to enable incoming productions to choose to work in New Zealand.
The Government contracts Film New Zealand to provide these services.
Originally constituted as a charitable trust, changes to Government funding requirement in 2012 saw the organisation restructure as a non-charitable trust, the Trustee of which is Film New Zealand Ltd. Film New Zealand Ltd’s board of directors represent the industry, government and business.
Film New Zealand Ltd enters into contracts with partners and Government organisations. At any given time, the then Film New Zealand board chair is the sole shareholder in Film New Zealand Ltd, and the chair holds these shares under a Declaration of Trust on behalf of the members the New Zealand film industry. This is a custodial role, and automatically passes from one chair to the next.
This structure gives Film New Zealand the opportunity to generate partnerships and revenue in addition of Government funding. It reflects the drive and focus of the organisation to benefit the industry by encouraging a healthy world class screen industry in New Zealand.
